The Department of Sports Medicine is one of the Professional Departments of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports. It was created in 2010 along with other new professional departments in the then National Sports Commission.
Sports Medicine is one of the Critical success elements in elite sports performance. The other critical success elements are:
ii. Sports Science
iii. Well maintained and functional facility
iv. Efficient organizational and administrative structure.
v. All nations that do well in elite sport make substantial and sustained investment in these success elements.
The Core Mandates of the Department are:
i. To organize and provide comprehensive and effective sports medicine and sports science support to national athletes in order to ensure good health and wellbeing and optimal fitness leading to enhanced and successful sport performance.
ii. To work in concert with other relevant departments of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports in ensuring the optimization of the potential of National Athletes i.e. performance enhancement.
iii. To work and collaborate with other stakeholders to encourage and promote physical activity, safe sports participation and active lifestyle for the promotion of the health and well-being of the citizenry.
To provide the best possible medical care for Nigerian sports men and women for enhanced performance. The Department also help states and other stakeholders in building capacity in basic sports medicine for the benefit of enhancing the health and fitness of their athletes.
The Department is structured into four Divisions
a) Clinical Sports Medicine including units for Nursing services, Sports radiology and imaging,
b) Pharmacy and Doping Control
c) Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation
d) Sports Sciences- including Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Sports Psychology etc.
